This stunning image is Timothy Martin's artistic rendition of the Adirondack chair, reimagined in flowers, and it makes a beautiful, colorful Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle.

The Adirondack chair has become ubiquitous on decks and patios across America, but have you ever stopped to think about how the chair originated?

The first Adirondack chair was created in 1903 by Thomas Lee in Westport, New York. Although from Massachusetts, Lee spent many summers at the family house and wanted to decorate the country cottage. But he couldn't find comfortable outdoor furniture styles he liked. He wanted to create a chair that could handle the rugged terrain of the Adirondacks. It needed to be sturdy, balanced, and comfortable on everything from the sandy ground to a small hill.

Most Victorian garden furniture of the time was wicker or wrought iron. More suited to afternoon tea than sprawling with a book in the sunshine. Lee felt chairs needed to be sturdier to stand up to outdoor use.

Eventually, he came up with the perfect chair: wide armrests, a high back, and a slanted seat (the seat and back were made from single pieces of wood).

Over the next several decades, many other designers modified the original Westport outdoor chair. Eventually, the chair began going by the name Adirondack after the Adirondack Mountains near where Thomas Lee originally created it.
