When we think of birdhouses, we might think of places where birds nest in spring and summer. However, some birds, both resident birds and those that don't migrate to somewhere warm for winter, will also use birdhouses or roost boxes in the winter as places to shelter.

During the fall and winter, when protective foliage is scarce, birdhouses play a crucial role in providing a safe haven for birds to roost and sleep. This is especially important for birds that don't migrate and need a reliable shelter during the harsh winter months.

During the colder months, cavity-nesting birds, including many songbirds, rely on birdhouses for a warm, dry, and safe place to stay out of inclement weather. By providing a birdhouse, you play a crucial role in helping birds like bluebirds, chickadees, titmice, screech owls, swallows, cardinals, sparrows, jays, wrens, and woodpeckers survive the winter.

It's never too early to put out birdhouses for winter. Birds, being master planners, are always scouting out resources for the future. If your birdhouse is still up from the spring and summer months, leave it out for fall and winter. Just remember to clean it out between seasons or between broods.

Consider placing the birdhouse near natural food sources or other bird-friendly features in your yard to attract more birds. Between the exhaustion of migrating and the energy spent looking for food, keeping warm, and raising their young, birds need sustenance. And in winter, natural food sources are in short supply, so feeders are a godsend.

While birds don't know that birdhouses are consciously for them, they are drawn to them based on instinctual behaviors and environmental signals. Much as we are drawn to pictures and puzzles of birds enjoying them.
