Considered one of Art Nouveau's most innovative and talented creative forces, Eugène Grasset is today remembered for depicting women with great elegance.

Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1845, he worked mainly in Paris during the Belle Epoque in various creative design fields.

He studied drawing and architecture in Zürich. After completing his education, his family took him to Egypt. This experience would later be reflected in a number of his poster designs.

Grasset's versatility as a designer was genuinely remarkable. He left his mark on many creative fields, from furniture to wallpapers, fabrics to tapestries, ceramics to jewelry. His architectural woodwork elements were integrated into buildings, showcasing his diverse skills.

In 1877, he turned to graphic design, and poster art quickly became his forte. Grasset was known for ornamental elements, including flowers, trees, and plants. These elements were full of curvy and circular motifs, delicate and sophisticated, and perfectly delivered in the Art Nouveau design.

With the rising popularity of French posters in the United States, Grasset's influence quickly transcended borders. Several American companies sought his expertise, leading to his first American commission in the 1880s. His cover design for the 1892 Christmas issue of Harper's Magazine was a testament to his growing influence. Grasset's work for U.S. institutions, characterized by its unique blend of European and Eastern influences, played a significant role in introducing the Art Nouveau movement to American art, a legacy that continues to be appreciated and celebrated.

In 1896, Grasset created the La Belle Jardiniere series of calendar images. We liked them so much that we didn't want to choose between them, so we created this calendar collage with some of his other wallpaper designs.
