Ando Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō in 1797 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), was one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e tradition of Japanese woodblock prints. Initially trained as a fireman like his father, Hiroshige turned to art after being accepted into the Utagawa school under the mentorship of Utagawa Toyohiro. His early works focused on book illustrations and portraits, but he found his true calling in landscape art, where he would ultimately make his most significant impact.

Hiroshige's unique perspective, which he honed through his renowned series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō in the early 1830s, depicted scenic views along the vital road connecting Edo to Kyoto. His ability to capture the changing seasons, atmospheric effects, and fleeting moments of daily life set his work apart from his contemporaries. Hiroshige's compositions combined realism with poetic subtlety, often featuring asymmetrical balance and dynamic use of perspective that influenced both Japanese and Western art.

Hiroshige's influence on Western art is profound. He produced over 8,000 prints throughout his life, with other celebrated series including One Hundred Famous Views of Edo and The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaidō. His artistry profoundly impacted European Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, including Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet, who admired his bold use of color and unique spatial compositions. Hiroshige passed away in 1858 during a cholera epidemic, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the global appreciation of Japanese art.
