One of the largest islands in the Mediterranean, Cyprus sits at a maritime crossroads between Egypt, Syria, Turkey, and Greece.

It is known as "The Jewel of the Mediterranean" and was considered the birthplace of Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty.

10,000 years of civilization gather here on one island. Over the centuries, Cyprus has been invaded by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lusignans, Genoese, Venetians, Ottomans, British, and Turks. If you scratch the soil anywhere in Cyprus, you will find traces of its magnificent history.

It was a popular vacation spot for ancient Romans, who would come to enjoy the hot springs and baths throughout the island. The ancient city of Salamis has been home to Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, and Romans at various times.

The popular UK artist Jenny Wheatley shared with us this beautiful image of the eastern coast of Cyprus. This part of the island is famous for its fine white sandy beaches with shallow turquoise waters.

The perfect gift for wooden jigsaw puzzlers and Mediterranean fans, this traditional adult wooden jigsaw puzzle can be done time and again. Our wooden jigsaw puzzle artists have included many fishing and sailing-shaped whimsy wooden jigsaw puzzle pieces that match the theme of the image. Jenny Wheatley

Jenny Wheatley, born in 1959, is a British painter celebrated for her vibrant and eclectic works that draw inspiration from diverse cultures and landscapes. Her artistic journey has been profoundly shaped by her extensive travels. These include a year painting in Cyprus, a sponsored expedition through Kashmir into Ladakh with the British/Indian army in 1987, and six months in the South Pacific in 1988, where she painted aboard working cargo boats in Polynesia. These experiences have enriched her work with a unique depth and diversity.

Wheatley's work is a unique blend of rich color and intricate patterns. Her paintings often depict interior scenes, landscapes, and still lifes, each exuding a distinct sense of place and narrative. Her use of color is particularly emotive, allowing her to convey personal responses to the environments she explores. Whether working in the open air or in her studio, she skillfully translates her experiences into sophisticated and playful compositions.

Wheatley's career has taken her work to the global stage, with extensive exhibitions across the UK and internationally. Her work has graced the walls of prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy, the Royal Watercolour Society, and the New English Art Club, of which she became a member in 1983. In 1984, she was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society, a testament to the international recognition of her talent. Her paintings, held in numerous public and private collections, including those of HM The Queen and HM Queen Mother, have truly made a mark on the art world.
