Next week, the new movie by the award-winning director Ridley Scott makes its debut. The title character, Napoleon, is being played by the talented Joaquin Phoenix with all the vim and vigor he can muster.

As there is an iconic painting capturing Napoleon by the French artist Jacques-Louis David, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to depict Napoleon in puzzle form and celebrate this icon of history.

Although Bonaparte only exercised power for a decade and a half, his impact lasted until nearly the end of the twentieth century, almost two hundred years after his death. People love reading about him and his spectacular rise, just as they read about Alexander in Roman and medieval times.

Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica in 1769 and died in exile on St. Helena in 1821. It was a short life but a highly impactful one.

He considered himself, first and foremost, a brilliant military leader in the tradition of the Caesars, and many of his tactical strategies are still employed in warfare today.

Following the French Revolution, he took control of the government and crowned himself Emperor. He reformed the French government and created an empire. Napoleon was praised for his genius as a tactician and his charismatic leadership skills. Still, his story is also one of excessive ambition that eventually drove him beyond rational thought to his fall from grace.

The movie tells the story of his rise to power and his well-documented relationship with Josephine de Beauharnais, who became Empress Josephine, in one of history's most recognizable love stories.

This masterful painting by the French artist Jacques-Louis David celebrates Napoleon at the height of his power and was commissioned as a gift to Bonaparte by Charles IV of Spain. We hope you enjoy it as a puzzle, whether you get the opportunity to see the movie, or not.
