The beloved Maroon Bells are two of the most photographed mountains in North America. Rising more than 14,000 feet above sea level just south of Aspen, the twin peaks are striped with snow all summer. Aspen trees cover the hillsides, while Maroon Lake provides a mirror that grounds the whole scene in a postcard-perfect reflection.

They get the "Maroon" part of their name from their composition of soft red shale and stained siltstone, which looks maroon in the mountain atmosphere. The red color comes from tiny iron particles that have been oxidized or rusted.

This sedimentary rock is soft and crumbly, unlike the hard granite of many other Colorado mountains, and it can easily break under pressure, making it dangerous to climb or hike.

Geologists estimate that the Maroon Bells began to form 300 million years ago from tectonic plate movement. They were created from ancient sea bed deposits compressed under tremendous pressure and lifted up along with the rest of the Rockies.

"The Bells" moniker comes from their distinctive shape, which comprises two peaks, Maroon Peak (South Maroon) and North Maroon Peak, in the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness.

Though not the tallest in Colorado, the Maroon Bells rank among North America's top 50 mountains.

In addition to the beautiful peaks, the Bells offer gorgeous fields of wildflowers, groves of quaking aspen trees, and plenty of local wildlife. Moose, deer, bighorn sheep, bears, porcupines, and beavers are among the many species that call the lake and mountains home.

Over 300 thousand visitors flock to Maroon Lake each season to capture the magical peaks for themselves, making them quite crowded in summer.
