Although primarily a portrait painter, John Collier also delved into themes from history, legend, and literature. The Sleeping Beauty was first exhibited in Liverpool at the 49th Autumn Exhibition of Modern Art in 1921 and sold for £400.
Sleeping Beauty was cursed to sleep for a hundred years by an evil fairy and was to be awakened by a handsome prince. A good fairy noticed that Sleeping Beauty would be frightened if she were to wake up alone, so the good fairy put every animal and person in the palace to sleep so that when Sleeping Beauty woke up, so would everyone and she wouldn't be alone.
