Andre E. Marty

André Édouard Marty, a French artist born in Paris on April 16, 1882, left an indelible mark on the Art Deco movement through his illustration, graphic design, and decorative arts. His studies at the École des Beaux-Arts and training under Fernand Cormon in Montmartre, where he developed a refined, elegant style influenced by contemporaries such as Maurice Boutet de Monvel, set the stage for his influential career. Marty's early work appeared in the theatrical review Comoedia Illustré in 1909, and he gained recognition in 1910 with a poster for the Ballets Russes at the Opéra, now housed in the Musée de la Publicité in Paris.

Between 1912 and 1925, Marty's versatility shone through as he became a prominent contributor to La Gazette du Bon Ton, a leading fashion magazine known for its pochoir (stencil) illustrations. He was one of only four artists to contribute to every issue of the publication. His work also appeared in VogueHarper's BazaarVanity FairHouse & GardenLe Sourire, and Fémina. Marty illustrated numerous books, including Henri de Régnier's Scènes Mythologiques (1924), and designed posters for London Transport. In the 1930s, he expanded into costume and set design for theater, cinema, and ballet and later created designs for enamel vases, plates, and jewelry.

Marty played a significant role in major exhibitions, serving on the jury for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, which gave the Art Deco movement its name. He also contributed to the decoration of the Pavillon Fontaine at the exposition and, in 1937, worked on the jardin d'hiver of the Pavillon de la Société des Artistes Décorateurs at the Exposition Internationale. He resided at the Maison Nationale des Artistes in Nogent-sur-Marne from 1966 until his death on August 6, 1974, in Limeil-Brévannes.
