Severin Roesen

Severin Roesen (c. 1815 – c. 1872) was a Prussian-American painter who was celebrated for his opulent and meticulously detailed still-life compositions, particularly of fruit and flowers. Born in Boppard, Prussia, Roesen trained as a porcelain and enamel painter before immigrating to the United States in 1848, likely fleeing the European revolutions of that year. Settling in New York City, he exhibited eleven paintings at the American Art Union between 1848 and 1852, establishing a reputation for his lush, vibrant depictions of nature's bounty.

Roesen's work is characterized by its rich color palette and intricate arrangements, drawing significant inspiration from the opulent and meticulously detailed still-life compositions of 17th-century Dutch art. His paintings often feature an array of fruits, flowers, and glassware meticulously arranged to convey abundance and harmony. Around 1857, Roesen relocated to Pennsylvania, residing in cities such as Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and eventually Williamsport by 1863. In these communities, his art found a receptive audience among prosperous merchants and the German-American population, leading to numerous commissions for homes, taverns, and hotels.

Despite his success, details about Roesen's later life remain scarce, adding an air of mystery to his story. His last known dated painting is from 1872, after which records of his activities cease. Nevertheless, his legacy endures through the over 300 still-life paintings attributed to him, many of which are held in major American art institutions. Roesen's work continues to be celebrated for its technical mastery and embodiment of 19th-century American ideals of prosperity and natural beauty.
