Jigsaw Puzzles Improve your Health?

Recent studies have come out sharing that jigsaw puzzles refine visual-spatial reasoning and cognition. Putting together a puzzle is proven to better short-term memory and improve one’s concentration for problem-solving. Jigsaw puzzles help connections between the brain cells in your short-term memory, enhancing one’s mental speed. You can complete jigsaw puzzles with others, or you can work on one yourself. Either way, puzzles boost your creative mind and imagination, allowing you to entirely focus on what is in front of you and use parts of your brain you wouldn’t usually use in other daily functions. 

We spend so much time nowadays staring at a glaring screen, whether work, watching tv, playing video games, or a phone screen; most of our days can be in front of a screen. Jigsaw puzzles allow you to escape the screen and spend time away from the tensions of the world. Especially during a pandemic, it can be hard to concentrate on other aspects of life and turn to screens instead of other activities.

Many individual’s mental healths have shot down in this profound time; many people feel helpless and not in control. Puzzles allow you to be in control; they can help struggling individuals find some peace in this world. They are a form of meditation, pushing away other thoughts and focusing instead on one single image for a while.

Along with improving health mentally, puzzles are also nostalgic. Some people had to dig through numerous boxes as the pandemic hit to find that one puzzle they bought years ago that ended up in a cardboard box collecting dust in the attic. They can give someone that boost of serotonin, opening up a new (or old) puzzle they haven’t done, benefiting their mental health. You can also spend time with friends and family through this activity and work to complete a goal together. There is nothing more satisfying than that final puzzle piece fitting into place.

Trinity — thank you for you above comments. My husband and I have just discover wooden jigsaw puzzles and we love them. I have been sick for 3 years now and they do help me so much with my mental state and the time goes by so quickly and I feel I am getting something creative done. We have taken pictures of our finished puzzles and have shared them with friends and people we just met. My brother is calling my husband and I – THE PUZZLERS. LOL.
