The Siesta was painted while Van Gogh was resident in a mental asylum in Saint-Rémy de Provence. The composition is taken from a drawing by Jean-Francois Millet for his series Four Moments in the Day.
Van Gogh often copied the works of Millet, whom he considered to be a more modern painter than Manet.
Van Gogh was faithful to the style of the original drawing even including to the still life details in the foreground, but he does impose his own style upon this country scene which symbolized the rural France of the 1860s

The siesta is an oil on canvas painted while Van Gogh was interned in a mental asylum in Saint-Remy de Provence between December 1889 and January 1890.
Although the idea is copied, it was inspired by one of Jean Millet's drawings. Interestingly The Siesta has been considered one of his masterpieces and makes a beautiful wooden puzzle for adults.
