A love letter is a romantic way to express feelings of love in written form. They have been composed, treasured, and written about for centuries. 

Whether delivered by hand, Mail, carrier pigeon, email, or romantically left in a secret location, the letter may be anything from a short and simple message of love to a lengthy explanation of feelings. 

The history of love letters begins early on. 

One of the first love letters in the world was mentioned more than 5000 years ago in the Bhagavatha Purana and is one from Rukmini to Krishna.

They were mentioned in the Song of Solomon in the bible, and Cicero and Pliny wrote letters to their respective wives.

There have been many famous love letters throughout the years. Beethoven wrote his "Immortal Beloved," there was correspondence between poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett, and they were pivotal in Jane Austen's Persuasion when Captain Wentworth wrote to Anne Elliott.

Napoleon Bonaparte wrote many long and flowery letters to Josephine, saying, "I hope to hold you in my arms before long when I shall lavish upon you a million kisses, burning as the equatorial sun."

George Washington was more to the point and kept it short and sweet in his correspondence with Martha, ending one of his letters - "I retain an unalterable affection for you, which neither time nor distance can change."

Computers have not affected the art of the love letter. Instead, they have fuelled its interest and effect. Love letters can now be emailed and texted to lovers separated by oceans and continents. Clearly, the love letter has evolved through the ages, still to be treasured and meaningful in the present day.
